Ampersand is pleased to present an evening conversation with photographers Robert Lyons and Chikara Umihara. Titled Tsumugu, their conversation will center on their recently published photobooks, Pictures from the Next Day by Lyons and Whispering Hope by Umihara. Using these bodies of work as a departure point, this open-ended discussion will also explore how the design of books relates to their own art practice and the culture of art photography at large, both here in America and in Japan.

Robert Lyons lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He is Director at the Hartford Art School International Limited Residency MFA Program. A solo exhibition of new photographs, One Eye Crying, opens in April at Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. Published by Zatara Press, Pictures From The Next Day focuses on one man, Walter Niemiec, who spent his life in Western Massachusetts in the house where he was born. His only time away from this one house, a structure that will outlast a lifetime, was as a Navy Radioman during WWII. Through focusing on Walter’s objects and space, Lyons presents a discourse on aging, life and the choices within which one exists. Walter’s surroundings and eccentricities are at once singular and universal.

Chikara Umihara lives and works in Yokohama City, Japan. In addition to his art practice, he writes for IMA, a Japanese photography magazine known for profiling photographers from around the world as well as presenting features on notable trends in the field of art photography. Whispering Hope is a record of trips across America by Greyhound Bus that Umihara took over the course of five years, without any specific destination in mind. Following self imposed rules, he confined his picture making to the bus and the stops it made. Combining views from bus windows, portraits of bus passengers, bus stations and short texts, Whispering Hope illustrates a personal and poignant view on the current state of a nation.
